SIB-Utrechtlezing Bio-fuel vs. Foodproduction
dinsdag 15 december 2009
Tijdstip: 19:30 uur
Locatie: Instituto Cervantes, Domplein3, Utrecht

From 7 till 18 December, the city of Copenhagen will host the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC). In this light SIB-Utrecht presents a lecture on biofuels vs. foodproduction.

Biofuels are seen as good option to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The question is: are they really? Critics argue that biofuels are not cleaner than conventional fuels and can be even more polluting in some cases. Advocates state that with the new generations, this problem doesn’t occur anymore.

But there is a whole different problem with biofuels. When one uses for example palmoil or corn to produce “green” fuel, these products cannot be used as food anymore. And poorer countries suffer from this. During this lecture we hope to find out how all of this works and influences eachother.

This evening will be in English.

One of the speakers will be Mrs. Vicky Marin from the Universiteit Twente. She did research for the book ‘Biofuels and Rural Poverty’ and is currently doing research on the effects of biofuels in developing countries.
